From talent gaps to growth: How an environmental services business built offshore capability

tdg from talent gaps to growth how an environmental services business built offshore capability

About the client

Our client is a large environmental services business with a multi-site operation and a substantial field workforce. As the business grew, so did the pressure on its finance and data functions. Accurate reporting and clear operational visibility were becoming more important but finding experienced local talent quickly and at a sustainable cost was increasingly difficult. The business needed another way to add capability without overloading its internal team.

The challenge: Building capacity without compromising quality

Growth was creating more complexity across the business, while local recruitment was struggling to keep pace. Finance and data roles were becoming particularly difficult to fill, creating pressure on existing teams and limiting how quickly the business could strengthen reporting and operational support.

The CFO saw an opportunity to build dedicated offshore capability rather than continue relying solely on the local hiring market. The goal was simple: find the right people, integrate them properly, and create a model that could grow with the business.

The solution: Start with one role, prove the model, then scale

The business partnered with Away Digital Teams to build an offshore team in Vietnam.

Rather than committing to multiple hires immediately, the engagement started with one priority role: a Data Analyst

Away Digital Teams sourced and screened candidates against the client’s technical requirements, communication needs, and cultural fit. The client reviewed the shortlist, interviewed candidates, and chose who joined the team.

The new hire was then integrated directly into the client’s existing systems and workflows, contributing to reporting, shared platforms, and operational data alongside the local team.

That first placement gave the business confidence to expand. An Accounts Payable Officer was added next, extending the offshore model into finance, with further Accounts Receivable support now being explored.

The results: From one hire to broader offshore capability

The first Data Analyst moved through recruitment and onboarding and was fully integrated within approximately 6-8 weeks. From there, the engagement expanded across finance and data.

The business achieved:

  • Greater capacity across critical finance and data functions
  • Reduced pressure on local teams
  • Improved reporting and operational visibility
  • Access to experienced talent beyond the local hiring market
  • Direct integration with existing systems and workflows
  • A flexible model that can expand as new roles are needed

Senior leadership also highlighted the quality of the candidates, clear coordination, and transparency throughout the engagement. What began as one targeted hire became a reliable way to add capability across the business.

Why the model worked

Three things helped the engagement develop successfully.

The client stayed in control Away Digital Teams sourced and screened the talent, but the client interviewed candidates and decided who joined the team. The offshore team worked inside the business The new hires joined existing workflows, systems, and communication rhythms rather than operating as a separate external resource. Growth happened when the business was ready The client started with one role, assessed the results, and expanded only after the model had proven itself. That made offshore growth measured, practical, and aligned with real business needs.

From filling a gap to building for growth

This engagement started with a recruitment challenge, but the outcome went further. By building offshore capability one role at a time, the business created more capacity across finance and data while maintaining control over quality, workflows, and team structure.

The model now gives the company a stronger foundation to add skills as its needs evolve. That’s the approach we call Outsourcing 2.0: building dedicated teams that become part of how the business works. Looking for a more scalable way to build your team? Talk to Away Digital Teams.
